INSPIRATIONS & IDOLS

Mintis L. Hicks Hankerson

The saddest thing Aaliyah had experienced in her live was passing of her grandmother Mintis L. Hicks Hankerson.
'I have a tattoo in her honor. I know I am going to see her again sometime. She always made me feel good about myself.. always encouraged me.. and everyone needs someone like that when they are growing up'

Liyah dediacted Mintis her last album 'Aaliyah' She wrote:
'This album is dedicated to the memory of my grandmother Mintis L. Hicks Hankerson.
Who like the sun, gave me sustenance and warmth.
And, like the moon, guided me through my darkest nights.
I Love You.'

Liyah had a really close relationship with her grandmother. Mintis was fascinated with Aaliyah, she was talking about her all the time. She gave a present to Liyah - it was a stuffed orangutan. Babygirl named it Lina and slept with her every night to be closer to her grandmother. She got one more present:

"It's the ring my grandmother gave me before she got really sick with Alzheimer's. I wear it on my wedding finger, so it's a little confusing to people. But I'll never take it off, even when I get married."

Diane Haughton

Aaliyah was questioned who ispired her to be a singer when she was young...
'My mother sings, when I was younger I sang with her a lot, she influenced me, I was into the artists she was into so I have to choose her.'

''My mom was an educator and has a really good head on her shoulders. She teaches me to give back We have both Breast Cancers and Parkinson's disease in the family, so she makes sure I go visit patient's and also participate in fundraisers. She keeps me well rounded as an individual as well, making sure I am exposed to a lot of things other kids my age aren't.'

sley Brothers
Aaliyah recorded new version of 'At Your Best (You Are Love)' - it was a big honor for her considering that Isley Brothers were one of her favourite groups. On her album she also sings about this band. In 'Young Nation':

'As I'm strollin' down the park with really nothing on my mind
Laid back and I'm just thinkin' of old times
Pop in our Isley Brothers tape when I'm waxin' '

Mr. Biggs (lead vocalist) says that she was a sweet and beautiful girl. Isley Brothers sing 'At Your Best' in memory of Aaliyah during their shows.

Favourite cd's:

> Naughty by nature
She loved that album and was a big fan of that band.

> Stevie Wonder, 'Talking book'.

She considers herself as one of the biggest fans in whole world. She met Stevie Wonder during MTV Icon: Janet Jackson. It was a big honor.

"Very deep. I love deep songs. I admire Stevie Wonder, because he's someone that can take a love song and really put you in a whole 'nother place.'

> Sade
She was beautiful well Sade was definitely her idol. Both were born on 16th of January so Aaliyah felt like Sade was her soul mate. Liyah's favourite song was 'Is it a crome?'. She appreciated Sade for being faithful to her style. She just appears on the stage and is fabulous. She is a beautiful personality.

-> 'De La Soul  'On the roll'
' Kocham ten album. Słuchałam go każdego dnia po powrocie ze szkoły, kochałam się w nim ( wskazuje i śmieje się), kochałam piosenkę 'Buddy', to była moja ulubiona: 'you're my buddy, buddy, you know you make me go nutty...'. W tej piosence byli super ludzie- Queen Latifah, Monie Love, Jungle Brothers, ten utwór wiąże się z wieloma wspomnieniami, Michigan, dzieciństwem.'

> En Vogue
She was preparing a show with her friends when she was in school. They were En Vogue:) Aaliyah played Dawn. She will never forget about it and this is the reason why she loved En Vogue.

Favourite songs:

1. 'Thriller' - Michael Jackson
This is her best song & video of all time!!!

2. 'Forever my lady'- Jodeci
She had posters with Jodeci on walls. She had a crush on DeVante.

3. 'Bittersweet' - Louis Taylor
This song is perfect for her. She doesn't understand why Louis Taylor isn't really popular.

Marvin Gaye
Marvin recorded 'Got To Give It Up' - part I & II in 1977. Liyah placed her own version of this track on her second album. In the video Liyah sings in a box made of glass. They also used a footage of Marvin's concert. So it looks like Liyah and Marvin were dancing next to eachother.

Janet i Michael
'I know exactly what I want to do. The older I get, the more in control I am. Janet [Jackson]'s shows, Michael Jackson's shows, are what you really have to aim for. They're onstage for an hour-and-a-half, two hours. But you never get bored, because the show is constantly changing.'

Janet Jackson  - 'Alright' video
During MTV Icon - Janet Jackson, Liyah said that her favourite Janet's video is 'Alright'. We all know that Janet is a pattern for many young artists. They admire her songs, dance... So did Aaliyah. In her 'More Than A Woman' video there is a dance with a scarf - u can find something similar in 'Alright':) Coincidence?

'Of course Sade, and D'Angelo is someone I always admired- we actually tried to get together for this album but our schedules didn't mesh- hopefully it's something we'll stll do.'

She wanted to record a song with D'Angelo because...
'When it comes to collaborations it's good to think of whose style would mesh with yours, I think our styles would work well together.

'I listen to a lot of the same artists I listened to when I was younger: Stevie (Wonder) and Sade. As I got older I got into alternative styles after my brother turned me unto them: Nine Inch Nails, Korn, Oasis and I started to check out things that I wouldn't have and returned to some that I did: Luther Vandross, Johnny Mathis!.'

She also liked: Destiny's Child, Playa...

They are also two pop artist who she admired: Britney Spears & 'N Sync.

Barbara Streisand
'She did what I'm doing--started off singing and moved into acting and produced.'

'I always admired her for the fact that she was an entertainer who tried different things and was successful- she is a strong woman and I admire that.'

Other songs:
-> Aaliyah liked singing 'For All We Know' - Donnie Hathaway's song.
-> In Star Search, in age of nine, she performed 'My Funny Valentine' because it made her think about her mother.

'Silence Of The Lambs'
'I would have loved to have played Clarice Starling in Silence Of The Lambs, which is one of my favorite movies of all time. It's the best adaptation of a novel I've seen other than The Godfather.'

Actors
'There's so many people that I admire and would love to work with. I'd love to work with Gwyneth Paltrow, I think she's amazing. And someone whom I've admired since I was young is Morgan Freeman. So at some point in my career if I had that opportunity, that would really be great.'

She also admired Denzel Washington.

So these were Aaliyah's inspirations and idols. I believe that people who you like tell a lot about yourself. They mould your character and personality. They can change you, show you new feelings, emotions. They enrich you. So these artists made Aaliyah the person that she was - partly but they influenced her.
